Statement of Commissioner Connie Hedegaard on Ukraine and energy dependency

After yesterday's EU environment ministerial Council, EU climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard said on Ukraine and energy dependency: "Often when we discuss energy dependency in Europe we discuss it in the context of economic costs, the fact that we are sending more than 400 bn euros outside Europe every year to pay for our imported fossil fuels. With the ongoing discussions on Ukraine, I think we have also seen the political implications of Europe being dependent on so much energy imported from outside. I hope that this political aspect will of course be part of the discussions amongst EU leaders when they (...) discuss the future of climate and energy policies (...) at the European Council on 20-21 March."
