Confirmed yesterday from Ban Ki-moon, the designation of Patricia Espinosa as Executive Secretary of UNFCCC.
The Mexican lady, currently ambassador in Germany, was the Foreign Minister from 2006 to 2012.
Patricia Espinosa Cantellano has already proved her experience in the negotiations on climate change in 2010, when she led the COP 16 in Cancun, first and difficult meeting after the failure of Copenhagen in 2009.
The choice of Ban Ki-Moon proposes again a woman from Central America, in a sort of ideal succession with the previous chief, Christiana Figueres.
Patricia Espinosa has now the hard task of making operational the Paris Agreement and raising the level of ambition in the difficult challenge of maintaining the temperature “well below the 2°C”.
