2019 was 2nd hottest year on record

According to independent analyses by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Earth's global surface temperatures in 2019 were the second warmest since 1880.

The study conducted by the scientists of the US federal agency, shows that 2019 was 0.98°C hotter than the 1951-1980 average. So far, 2016 was the warmest year ever registered when the warming of the Pacific Ocean led to the intense and destructive phenomenon of the El Niño.

2019 high temperatures are part of a pattern that has been already highlighted in the recent years. In particular, the past five years have been the warmest of the last 140 years.

The results of this analysis are similar to those published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), whose Secretary, Petteri Taalas, underlines that "continuing with the current CO2 emissions trend, we are going towards an increase of world temperatures between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius within the end of the century".
