Also because the opposite is true: fossil sources are not economically competitive without public subsidies!

This is what emerges from a recent study published in occasion of the G20 meeting that opens tomorrow in Hamburg. In the G20 countries, fossil fuels receive 4 times more public financing compared to renewables, an economic aid that counteract the real economic competitiveness of energy production with different CO2 content.

In the G20 countries, the public sector supports fossil fuels with $71.8 billions, against $18.7 billions reserved for renewable energy. The biggest supporters of fossil sources are the Japanese, who reserve $16.5 billions to fossils compared to an amount 6 time lower for renewables. Among the worst of the class also Italy, that supports fossil fuel sources with $2.1 billions and renewables only with $123 millions. The most virtuous are the Germans, with $3.5 billions of public subsidies to fossils and £2.4 billions for renewables.

China, which is starting to implement a fossil-based cutting policy, still has a huge gap, with 13.5 billion dollars reserved to fossil fuels and only 85 millions for renewables.

The goal set in 2016 from G7 countries, to get by 2025 at the same level of financing for the two types of energy sources, was questioned this year with Trump becoming the new US President.

The claim that energy production from renewable sources is not economically viable without public financing is to be relegated among urban legends.
