CDP Report: more than 70% of global GHG emission is produced by 100 companies

50% of global GHG (Greenhouse Gases) emissions is produced by 25 world companies. If we consider the first 100 in the world, we cover 71% of global emissions. This is the different perspectives used by CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), where the center is the market instead of Member States, to map the emissions responsible for anthropogenic climate change. Pedro Faria, CDP's technical director, highlights companies' huge role to play in driving climate change, also recognizing the "absolute tension" existing between short term profitability and the urgent need to reduce emissions. A Carbon Tracker study in 2015 found that fossil fuel companies risked wasting more than $2tn over the coming decade by pursuing coal, oil and gas projects that could be worthless in the face of international action on climate change and advances in renewables – in turn posing substantial threats to investor returns.
