2017 was the second hottest year ever recorded and the first without an El Niño

Its influence is so significant on a planetary level that it causes an increase in average annual temperatures. La Niña, the phenomenon cyclically opposed to El Niño, tends to cause a reduction in average global temperatures. For this reason, when analyzing the trends of annual variation of world average temperatures, it is important to take into account the occurrence or not of these phenomena, a bit like, when analyzing the world swimming records, the different styles with which they were achieved are taken into account. The 2017 was a "neutral" year in this sense, without the presence of El Niño and with the highest temperature ever recorded within this "category", as well as the second ever record of temperature ever registered. The data is so striking that it can be compared to a world record of swimming in the backstroke specialty whose time however is also the second ever recorded in all categories, including free style. Needless to emphasize that we are now in the presence of records that are repeated in very regular and worrying way in recent years. But we have just celebrated the arrival of the new year and it is our duty to look at the future with an hopeful look. The hope of the whole planet is to have a 2018 able to bring with it effective actions of mitigation and adaptation to climate change, the registration of a clear path to reduce global emissions, an even more rapid diffusion of renewables, energy efficiency, electrical mobility, public transport system and a safe cycling and pedestrian mobility in cities.
