1.5 ° C? We can do it, but the will is missing

There is great expectations for the IPCC report on the 1.5 °C scenario that will be presented today in South Korea. The statements issued to The Guardian by Drew Shindell, climatologist from Duke University and co-author of the report, herald a scenario as dull and worrying. Nowhere in the world there seem to be governments remotely in line with the commitments to reduce emissions, consistent with a scenario that limits to 1.5 ° C the rise in temperature. Achieving this goal "would be theoretically possible, but it is extremely unlikely". Obviously the problem is mainly related to the production and use of energy and the cure is well known: a serious phaseout of fossil fuels, particularly coal, mass deployment of solar and wind energy and the eradication of emissions from cars, trucks and airplanes. However, the actions taken are not remotely effective, given that last year the global emissions of the planet started to grow again slightly after a few years in which they had stabilized. "The 1.5°C target is difficult, but it's possible," continues Shindell. ". The next four to 12 years are crucial ones, where we will set the path to how the world will develop in the decades ahead. But the rulers of the world do not seem to be particularly worried anymore about climate change ... and perhaps not even the citizens who are called to elect them.
