The recent EEA (Energy Environment Agency) report on Renewable Energy in Europe, highlighted the development in the energy sector and related areas.
The rate of renewable energy has doubled from 2005 to 2016, but has to be recorded a slight decrease in recent years as a result of the increase in the energy consumption and the poor progress in the transport sector. The 16.7% rate in 2016, together with the 17.4% estimated in 2017, show the real chance of reaching the 20% target in 2020. A turnaround is certainly necessary in order to reach the objective of 32% (at least) of renewable energy sources in 2030.
The use of renewable energy sources within the member states is multifaceted: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania and Sweden exceed 30% while Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta and the Netherlands are below the 9%. It should be noted that 85% of the installed capacity in 2017 belongs to renewable sources, particularly wind power and photovoltaic technologies are responsible alone for the 3/4 of renewable sources. Considering the electricity consumption only, the rate of renewable energy increases to about 33% in both 2016 and 2017.
According to this report, the EU is still the leader – at global scale - for per capita renewable energy capacity, but China is now investing more in this sector.
