USA: The “Pledges of America” in support of the Paris Agreement

The political battle continues in the US to counter Trump’s decision to discard the Paris Agreement.

The main characters are the Governor of California Jerry Brown, recently nominated by States and regions as special advisor for COP 23, and former New York Mayor Micheal Bloomberg.

Both very active at international level to demonstrate the existance of a US reality  on climate change different from the one showed by Trump, as proved by their prompt meetings with the Chinese and French presidents after Trump’s weel-known announcement in June 1st.

The “Pledges of America” will collect and analyze data on climate change from States, cities and companies in the US, which are still aligned with the Paris Agreement.

And the challenge against Trump on these issues continues, as demonstrated by Brown’s decision, announced during the G20, to host a global climate change meeting next year in California.

But actions that question Trump’s decision come from his own party, as the Republican House of Representative approved on July 14th a law that includes a section defining climate change as a threat to the National security.

In this section, the Pentagon is asked to deliver a report to Congress detailing the impact of climate change on the armed forces. The report also lists the 10 military bases most vulnerable to rising oceans, increased flooding, wildfires and other effects of climate change.

A wind of opposition to Trump also blows from the business, which launched the campaign “We are still in”, referring to the Paris Agreement. Companies the caliber of Apple and Facebook have already joined the campaign as well as the least-favored Exxon and BP oil companies. Next to the adhesion are also Richard Branson’s companies who recently made a public declaration to Trump, inviting him to review his decision on the climate agreement.
