Trump administration: a threat or an opportunity for Earth’s climate?
Trump’s announcement on June 1st has discouraged political analysts of climate change and a multitude of citizens on the planet, fearing that this could undermine the Paris Agreement, built with great difficulty and considered as much important as being fragile.
After the end of the G20 in Hamburg, just over a month after that announcement, it seems that the American President’s decision was a sort of a cure-all for the agreement itself, having injected an unexpected dose of energy.
An interesting analysis of the “Time” even consider that “U.S. withdrawal would be the best path forward to avoid America undermining its implementation”.
It seems in fact that Trump’s announcement has awakened from a deadly state a country that with Obama had come to sign the Agreement, but was unable to inflame the souls.
Trump, however, unintentionally generated a strong reaction in single countries, cities or representatives of the world of culture and society.
This can be seen also in the analysis of search of the terms “climate change” on Google, which had an impressive surge on June 2nd, so much to resemble the famous hockey stick of temperatures, but even with a steeper trend.
This is what happened also, on a different scale, at the G20 in Hamburg. It seems that there was the willingness from the “pro-agreement” front to give up something about carbon pricing or incentives for fossil fuels, but the US position has led to a convergence which ended with the final line-up of 19 to 1. The extreme position of the US has also made the countries interested to intermediate positions, like Saudi Arabia, forced to be part of the “hawks” of the climate, unable to support Trump’s unsustainable position against the Paris Agreement.
