Will climate change lead to a change of government in Australia?

The Australian Prime Minister, Liberal Malcolm Turnbull, has been challenged for the second time in three days from his resigning Interior Minister, Peter Dutton.

The resignation of Dutton, an exponent of the party’s most conservative faction, was accompanied by that of more than a dozen Ministers. Among the main reasons for the government crisis, are the management of the immigrant flows by the government and the commitment of Turnbull in the fight against climate change, a hot topic for a country characterised by strong coal production lobbies.

Turnbull passed his first vote of no-confidence on Tuesday (48 to 35) thanks to a step back in his climate policy, including national emissions reduction targets.

However, Dutton believes that the Prime Minister is particularly weak at this stage and has decided to attack him again, requesting his resignation.

The Paris Agreement seems then to be moving away from the Australian shores on the eve of the forthcoming COP 24 in Katowice, Poland.
